A Short History of Financial Euphoria - John Kenneth Galbraith

In this summary you will learn

Why market collapses happen and how they unfold
    How financial speculation works
How some early speculative debacles occurred

    Recommendation

John Kenneth Galbraith’s short, literary book on financial speculation and the inevitability of subsequent economic catastrophe contends that devastating financial collapse is built into the free-enterprise system – an idea as intriguing today as it was when this book debuted in the mid-1990s. The late famous economist ended this treatise with a chilling question: “When will come the next great speculative episode and in what venue will it recur?” Everyone now knows the answer to that question all too well. Alarmingly, according to Galbraith, the travails that capitalist economies are now grimly experiencing will recur over and over. getAbstract suggests that anyone who wants to understand the kinks in the system – and human nature – that will continue to lead to hugely devastating, economic train wrecks should read Galbraith’s book.

    About the author

World-famous economist John Kenneth Galbraith taught at Harvard and Princeton, and wrote more than 40 books. He served as U.S. Ambassador to India for President John F. Kennedy. Galbraith died in 2006.

Chindia - How China and India Are Revolutionizing Global Business

In this summary you will learn

How China and India are redefining world business
Why the differences between China and India are more numerous and significant than the similarities
What threats and opportunities China and India face in the future

    Recommendation

China and India are both vast, dynamic countries. The pace of their progress is furious and they are earmarked to become “the planet’s next economic superpowers.” Many commentators on Asia fall into the trap of a stereotype, as if they are classifying China and India together under one broad title – “Chindia.” However, China and India are starkly different nations, as highlighted in this book edited by Pete Engardio. For readers unfamiliar with either country, this text provides an easy-to-read introduction. It revisits some of the most common facts and fallacies about economic and business life in both states. getAbstract recommends this well-written, well-edited retrospective archive of BusinessWeek articles as an excellent historic source for anyone interested in China and India’s economic emergence during the past several years.

    About the author

Pete Engardio was BusinessWeek magazine’s Asia correspondent for six years and is co-author of Meltdown: Asia’s Boom, Bust and Beyond.

Long Walk to Freedom - The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela

In this summary you will learn

How Nelson Mandela survived 27 years in jail for armed opposition to apartheid
How he and the African National Congress defeated apartheid
How he became South Africa’s first black president

    Recommendation

Reading this firsthand, contemporaneous account of Nelson Mandela’s life is an extraordinary opportunity. Mandela, a South African freedom fighter and a political prisoner for 27 years, tells his own saga of how he helped his black countrymen throw off their apartheid chains, how the African National Congress waged and won its struggle, and how he became his nation’s first black president. Learn all this and more, directly from the living legend who brought it to pass. getAbstract recommends this compelling autobiography, an inside view of South Africa’s struggle and the revered Mandela’s unique political life.

    About the author

After 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Collapse - How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed

In this summary you will learn

Why some societies fail and others succeed
Where societies on Easter Island, Greenland and elsewhere went wrong
How New Guinea, Japan and the Dominican Republic have preserved their forests, and thus their societies

    Recommendation

In this fascinating, surprising study, Pulitzer Prize winner Jared Diamond examines how and why some societies fail while others thrive. Diamond makes this history of failed societies into a page-turner, while resisting the urge to oversimplify. He unflinchingly examines cannibalism and mass murder in the hellish downfalls of Easter Island and Rwanda. Yet, he also outlines hope-inspiring successes in New Guinea, Japan and the Dominican Republic. This fat tome is quite engrossing, though in spots Diamond shows an academic’s weakness for repetition and caveats. Even so, this compelling classic deservedly has spent a long time on the bestseller lists. getAbstract recommends it to anyone who hopes to understand how human societies have gone wrong – and right.

    About the author

Jared Diamond teaches geography at UCLA. His previous book, Guns, Germs, and Steel, won the Pulitzer Prize. He also has won the National Medal of Science and many other awards, and has written more than 200 articles for Discover, Nature and other magazines.

The Ascent of Money - A Financial History of the World

In this summary you will learn

    How banking began
    Why bubbles happen
What financial history tells about the present

    Recommendation

Niall Ferguson offers a comprehensive collection of anecdotes and observations about the development of finance. He begins with a brief discussion of pre-money societies. Then, he carries you through the birth of banking in Renaissance Italy, the 18th-century Mississippi and South Sea bubbles, the role of Nathan Mayer Rothschild in the Napoleonic Wars, and the 20th-century transition from the gold standard to free-market derivatives and currency trading. getAbstract finds Ferguson’s book eminently readable, entertaining and informative. One caveat: the author’s approach is more that of a journalist than a historian, so he does not advance much of a comprehensive theory to explain the events he discusses, even the ones that are still occurring, notably, the financial crisis that began in 2008. This tasty financial history thoroughly covers who, what, when, where and how, a feast of facts with not quite enough “why” for dessert.

    About the Author

Niall Ferguson is Laurence A. Tisch professor of history at Harvard University, senior research fellow of Jesus College, Oxford University, and a senior fellow of the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. His books include Paper and Iron, The House of Rothschild, The Pity of War, The Cash Nexus, Empire, Colossus and The War of the World.

The Origins of Value-The Financial Innovations that Created Modern Capital Markets

In this summary you will learn

How finance has evolved through civilization’s history
How four basic concepts underlie the workings of finance
How some historical highlights illuminate the development of finance, from the use of currency to the impact of fiscal crises

    Recommendation

This beautifully illustrated coffee table book takes readers on a journey through the history of finance, with scenic stops to view the details of Babylonian loan agreements, the calligraphy of Chinese contracts, the currencies of John Law and even King Leopold II’s deathbed marriage to a prostitute. Numerous experts, including Niall Ferguson and Robert J. Shiller, contributed individual essays, so the style and general quality of the text varies from chapter to chapter. The cohesion of the overall content is to the credit of editors William N. Goetzmann and K. Geert Rouwenhorst. Currency-related art and photographs (more varied and noteworthy than you may think) dominates this cross section of financial history from the ancient Sumerians to the Silk Road to Versailles. getAbstract recommends this attractive volume to those interested in financial history and to any bank or brokerage that wants just the right book for visitors to peruse while waiting in the lobby.

    About the Authors

William N. Goetzmann teaches finance and management at the Yale School of Management. He directs the International Center for Finance, where K. Geert Rouwenhorst, also a Yale finance professor, is deputy director.

The Secret Man - The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat

In this summary you will learn

How reporter Bob Woodward developed the source that would become Deep Throat
How leaks from FBI official W. Mark Felt affected the course of the Watergate scandal
How Felt’s identity was nearly revealed on several occasions
What decision-making process finally led Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to confirm that Felt was, in fact, Deep Throat

    Recommendation

Author and veteran reporter Bob Woodward ends this book by saying, "There never is a final draft of history." Perhaps, but his book turns the page on an era and on Deep Throat - the code name for FBI official W. Mark Felt - the pivotal secret source for the Watergate stories that helped bring down Richard Nixon’s presidency. Remarkably, Woodward and his Washington Post colleagues protected their source’s identity for more than 30 years. Woodward paints a compelling portrait of his almost tortured relationship with Felt, a father figure and mentor. Several times Felt came a hair’s breadth from being exposed. Pained, Woodward admits that he missed his chance to uncover Felt’s motivations for abetting the Post’s investigative crusade. By the time Woodward tried to reconcile their troubled relationship, Felt was 87 and dementia had twisted his memory. Yet, Felt triumphed in his historic clash with Nixon. Woodward concludes, "By surviving and enduring his hidden life...in his own way, W. Mark Felt won." Carl Bernstein’s epilogue, "A Reporter’s Assessment," is an equally fascinating contribution. getAbstract.com most highly recommends this book, especially for those seeking a better understanding of the Watergate participants, whose actions will continue to ripple the waters of American politics for many years to come.

    About the Author

Bob Woodward is synonymous with American investigative journalism, having covered the Watergate scandal with colleague Carl Bernstein. He has written or co-written 10 nonfiction bestsellers, including The Brethren: Inside the Supreme Court and Plan of Attack, his account of the Bush Administration’s decision to go to war in Iraq.
