The 48 Laws of Power - Robert Greene

    tumblr_lkt8un59Km1qzqmwc.jpg

Cuốn đầu tiên của mục này là cuốn gối đầu giường (phản) của mình.

In this summary you will learn

48 axioms that will help you accrue power in your organization
How to be ruthless, crafty, cunning and successful

    Recommendation

This book is amoral, hauntingly true and indispensable. It should be on the bookshelf of anyone who aspires to any level of success in any organization or profession. It should not gather dust but should be read regularly, according to a plan - one law a day, for example, absorbed slowly and contemplated deeply. Author Robert Greene draws on a rich variety of sources including books so threatening that they were banned by the ancient Chinese. He cites the memoirs of Machiavelli, various con men and many others who swept aside what ought to be in order to focus on what is. It might seem that anyone who follows all of these laws in their rich, narrative detail will turn out to be a very unpleasant person. That’s probably not true. getAbstract suspects, in contrast, that the person who masters the laws of power will be extremely pleasant, with winning ways and a knack for likeability, yet awe-inspiring and in control - though not always obviously so. Doesn’t that sound tempting?

The Power of Gold - The History of an Obsession - Peter L. Bernstein

    power-gold-history-obsession-peter-l-bernstein-paperback-cover-art.jpg

Giá vàng mấy ngày hôm nay "nhảy múa" khủng khiếp quá. Đọc thêm để hiểu về quyền lực của thứ kim loại màu vàng này.

In this summary you will learn

How people have perceived gold down through the ages
How the quest for gold has triggered violence since the dawn of mankind
Why the pursuit of gold indirectly led to the discovery of the New World

    Recommendation

Peter L. Bernstein’s history of gold is about much more than just the lure of precious metal - it’s about man’s relationship with wealth, his desire for prosperity and his lust for power. The story he tells presents an unflattering portrait of the human character. The book demonstrates how thirst for gold’s twin uses - adornment and currency - has driven humankind to countless atrocities. This volume is so elegantly written that it deserves its own gold-leaf pages. Bernstein traces the transformation of gold into money, beginning at the dawn of historic time and ending by asking if gold will ever again recover its status as the standard for establishing the value of money. getAbstract highly recommends this fine book for anyone fascinated by all that glitters, and for students of economic history as well.

    About the author

Peter L. Bernstein of New York City has written seven economics and finance books, including Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk and Capital Ideas and The Improbable Origins of Modern Wall Street. He is president of Peter L. Bernstein, Inc., a firm that provides economic consulting to institutional investors.

The 33 Strategies of War - Robert Greene

Cuốn tiếp theo của Robert Greene cũng gối đầu giường (phản) của mình.

In this summary you will learn

Why and how to employ strategic thinking in your life
What the 33 strategies of war are
How to use proven strategies to win

    Recommendation

Military and business strategists agree that if you cannot contend against others, you will quickly get left behind. The problem is, most people think and act tactically – not strategically. Robert Greene's intelligent book can help you change your approach. It takes a fascinating, in-depth look at some of the world's most famous master military strategists: Napoleon Bonaparte, Sun-tzu, Alexander the Great, Carl von Clausewitz, Erwin Rommel, Hannibal and many more. Greene organizes the sagacious thinking of these masterminds into 33 strategies, drawn from mostly from warfare but also from business, politics, entertainment and nature. He provides concrete ideas on how to put these cerebral concepts to practical use. The information is packed in tight. Fascinating accent pieces run in the outer margins, but alas, in small, red italics. getAbstract highly recommends this remarkable book that explains how to meet your challenges with the best battle-tested strategies.

    About the author

Robert Greene writes on topics of strategy. He has a degree in classical studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His frequent collaborator, Joost Elffers, produced this book.

The Concise Art of Seduction - Robert Greene

    9781861976413.jpg

Cuốn này mà đọc xong thì bạn trở thành "sát thủ" chốn tình trường

In this summary you will learn

    How to seduce anyone
How to use the principles of seduction
    Why seduction works

    Recommendation

As is only appropriate, this small volume is sleek and appealing, with a glossy cover that draws the eye. It begs to be opened. Go ahead - the reward is a bonbon box full of clever diversions that might be handy if you use them right, a bit naughty if you don't, and even slyly humorous if you catch the whiff of satire. The text is broken into small - dare one say it, intimate? - morsels that you can read in stolen snatches of time. Author Robert Greene's observations on how to seduce (that is, persuade) are bordered with quotations from authors, philosophers and lovers, all offering entertaining support. However, potential seducers should note two key points. First, while Greene delivers his advice in terms of sexual seduction, if you are careful and interpretative, you may be able to apply pieces of it to general persuasion, including in business. On the downside, many of his techniques are pointedly sexy, over-the-top, amoral or manipulative. getAbstract thus recommends this book to those who study human nature for its own sake and for fun; those who will apply or modify any techniques to attain power over others; or those with the self-discipline to glean the gems, but turn away from taking unethical or illegal advantage.

Aftershock - The Next Economy and America's Future - Robert B. Reich

    Image.jpg

In this summary you will learn

How growing income inequality in the US was responsible for the 2008 recession
Why a working middle class fuels everyone’s prosperity
How former Labor Secretary Robert B. Reich says policy makers should redress the imbalance

    Recommendation

Politicians and pundits like to blame Americans’ excessive debt for plunging the economy into recession in 2008. But middle-class earners had a good reason for borrowing: Their incomes have dropped since 1980, during a period when the US economy’s gains increasingly went to the wealthy. According to former US Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich, the only way out of the doldrums now is to redress that imbalance and help the middle class resume its role powering the economy. In this book, Reich explores the dire consequences of failing to get workers back to work. Without seeming particularly worried about stirring controversy, he offers his suggestions for restoring the “basic bargain” of shared prosperity: People work and the government supports good jobs backed by a “safety net” of public services. getAbstract recommends Reich’s sobering review to those studying ideas about what’s broken and how to fix it.

    Capital - Karl Marx

Cuốn kinh điển cho cả các học giả phương Tây và Việt Nam

    back_gram_capital.gif

In this summary you will learn

How labor and money become commodities
How capitalists profit from labor’s “surplus value”
How, according to Marx, class struggles between capitalists and workers will end in revolution

    Recommendation

Karl Marx’s technical masterpiece painstakingly, and often dramatically, roots out the causes of social and economic inequality. Unlike The Communist Manifesto, which he wrote with Friedrich Engels, this classic text is not a call to revolution but rather a comprehensive and systematic analysis and “critique of political economy,” according to its original subtitle. Marx spent 15 years working on just the first volume of his complex masterwork. In it he details the “surplus value” that workers create for those who own the “means of production,” and how exploitative capitalists sell their goods not to purchase other goods, but to increase their own wealth. “Money making money,” or the capital accumulation process, lies at the heart of Marx’s critique of capitalism. getAbstract recommends his seminal work to those who wish to understand the origins of arguably the most disruptive work of political and economic philosophy of the 20th century.

    About the author

Karl Marx, born in Trier, Germany, in 1818, studied law, philosophy and history, and worked as an editor for a liberal newspaper. Censored for his views, he moved to France and met the son of a factory owner, Friedrich Engels, with whom he wrote The Communist Manifesto in 1847. In 1849, Marx went into exile to London, where he began an intensive study that resulted in his masterpiece of political economics, Capital. The first volume was published in 1867; the second and third volumes were published after he died in England in 1883.

In Defense of Globalization - Jagdish Bhagwati

Cứ nói đến Toàn cầu hóa là phải nói đến Bhagwati.

In this summary you will learn

Why critics of globalization are misguided
    What benefits international trade begets

    Recommendation

Jagdish Bhagwati is a true believer in the righteousness of international trade, and in this pro-globalization work, he takes a tone of nearly evangelical fervor. This tactic is likely to please those who agree with him, but it’s unlikely to win over sceptics. Bhagwati makes no attempt to hide his disdain for the patchouli-scented protesters who disagree with him, and he spends much of this book serving up their flimsiest arguments and then knocking them down. Of course, he also offers plenty of persuasive points, such as a review of research showing that multinationals that set up shop in poor nations pay more than their workers would receive from other employers. At his worst, Bhagwati makes the reptilian argument that mothers who leave behind their children for jobs in rich countries are simply making a logical choice, never mind the wrenching emotions that accompany such a move. At his best, he advocates for a safety net in poor nations and for a kinder, gentler form of globalization. getAbstract recommends this book to readers seeking an in-depth study of the pro-globalization mind-set.

Osama bin Laden - Michael Scheuer

    Scheuer.Book_Cover-198x300.jpg

Vị anh hùng hoặc tội đồ (theo quan điểm của từng người, tôn giáo) một thời.

In this summary you will learn

How and why Osama bin Laden built al-Qaeda
How he became a militant terrorist
What political and theological forces he used to shape al-Qaeda’s lasting dedication to terrorism and jihad

    Recommendation

Osama bin Laden’s jihad against the West continued years after September 11, 2001. While he remained a fugitive, his ideas and his al-Qaeda cells flourished despite global opposition and a relentless manhunt. Now that he is dead, how much continuing influence will his legacy have? Apparently, his machinations still threaten the US, the West, Israel, Christians in Arab lands, Jews, some Muslims and Arab efforts at building democracies. Michael Scheuer, who led the CIA’s bin Laden desk from 1996 to 1999, eloquently explains that defeating al-Qaeda requires understanding jihad’s history and deadly goals, like driving “infidels” out of Arab lands. Scheuer deeply criticizes US actions and policy – often controversially – but his analysis is engrossing, as is his informed, historical perspective on bin Laden, a lethally skilled leader who murdered ruthlessly in pursuit of his political and theological goals. While the opinions in this provocative, disturbing book are entirely the author’s, getAbstract recommends this revealing, fully annotated work as a valuable reference, whatever your politics (for readers may well be throwing things before Scheuer is done, enraged by his criticisms or, depending on their views, by policymakers’ decisions). Little did he know that two months after his book’s publication, the US Navy would slide Osama bin Laden’s dead body into the trackless sea – where the dark ripples still circle.

    About the author

Michael Scheuer led the CIA’s bin Laden unit from 1996 to 1999 and remained a counterterrorism analyst until 2004. He is the author of many books, including the best-selling Imperial Hubris: Why the West Is Losing the War on Terrorism.

The Future of the Dollar - Eric Helleiner and Jonathan Kirshner

    X75AB_4211332.jpg
In this summary you will learn

Why the dollar faces challenges to its global dominance
Which currency could replace it as the world’s legal tender of choice

    Recommendation

The dollar is dead; long live the dollar. That’s the message from this insightful look at the greenback’s future as the world’s reserve currency. Edited by Eric Helleiner and Jonathan Kirshner and including essays by half a dozen other academics, this overview plays out as a polite debate among professors. They offer useful historical and economic perspectives that will help readers understand the forces that make one currency a winner and another a loser. With a variety of contributors, however, the study suffers from a good deal of repetition of background material from one essay to the next, and an unevenness in writing styles that veer from clear to cloudy. While the book promises a spirited debate between “dollar optimists” and “dollar pessimists,” a close reading reveals that most of the contributors tend to fall into both camps simultaneously. getAbstract recommends this book to readers seeking an erudite review of the US dollar’s past, present and future in world currency markets.

Why the West Rules – for Now - Ian Morris

    Morris-Why-the-West-Rules-For-Now.jpg

In this summary you will learn

What human and scientific factors led the West to dominate the East
How that power balance may shift
How to compare Eastern and Western civilizations
What major events shaped both civilizations

    Recommendation

This panoramic history is formidable reading about the comparative development of Western and Eastern civilizations. It catalogs significant archeological, scientific, and political events of 16,000 years of human history and several millennia in the life of the planet. Historian Ian Morris explains the forces that allowed Western civilization to overtake Eastern civilization and why this critical balance may now be tipping in favor of the East. This is high-quality academic scholarship: an interdisciplinary analysis, tying together esoteric facts and maps spanning geography, historical theories, paleontology, genetics, climatology, archeology and politics. Morris’s book supports his detailed model comparing the development of Eastern and Western civilizations. His construct relies on recounting detailed history, analysis and comparisons. This can be challenging reading, albeit leavened by Morris’s visible scholarship and entertaining style. You have to want to finish this book, but if you are a serious reader of history, getAbstract assures you that the effort has very substantial rewards – and if you are building up your ambitions, it also makes for fascinating skimming.

The Rise and Fall of an Economic Empire - Colin Read

In this summary you will learn

How economic empires have evolved throughout history
Why shifts in economic power are accelerating
How economies at their heights can reinvent themselves

    Recommendation

Economic empires, like their political or military counterparts, tend to sow the seeds of their own destruction once they’ve reached their peaks. From those lofty heights, arrogance, changing consumption patterns, altered social expectations and, ultimately, a reversion to government to keep the financial engine going, all foretell an inevitable decline. So says Colin Read, an economics professor at the State University of New York, in his ambitious treatise on economic empires. He offers a thorough, if disordered, trip through economic history, while critiquing the problems of global empire. Though his text is challenging in its density and breadth but short on solutions, it is a solid introduction for students of economic history. getAbstract recommends this book mostly for an academic audience who believes that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

In this summary you will learn

Why globalized markets have brought both boom and bust
What steps policy makers could take to make global finance less volatile

    Recommendation

Questions about current account deficits and international savings rates send many fiscal analysts into jingoistic declamations. But Martin Wolf isn’t that kind of economic commentator. He’s the sort who realizes that global financial markets are fiendishly complex and, thus, that easy answers are likely to be too easy. In this study, Wolf adds depth and texture to such hot topics as China’s massive savings rate and its huge foreign-currency holdings. This is primarily an economist’s analysis, so Wolf doesn’t address the way financial markets affect everyday consumers and entrepreneurs. getAbstract recommends his book to observers who seek a learned, lucid, forward-looking perspective on global financial markets.

Be Your Own Lobbyist-How to Give Your Small Business Big Clout with State & Local Go

    Be Your Own Lobbyist.jpg

In this summary you will learn

Why lobbying is important to small business owners
    Whom to lobby
How to lobby under various circumstances

    Recommendation

If you’re a small business owner and think you have to endure a mind-numbing civics class to lobby effectively, here’s good news: Author Amy Handlin shows you how to contact and educate your local and state elected officials so you can enlist their support. Using the simple formula of “target, tools and tactics,” she shows business owners – or anyone who needs to lobby – the best ways to reach lawmakers. Her guidance is written for people in the United States, but she shares broadly applicable methods. The book includes an appendix chock-full of writing samples and resources. This manual is basic but interesting, and it doesn’t talk down to its audience, though you might quibble with some of the author’s stylistic choices. Still, getAbstract believes that because it removes the mysteries behind lobbying without being dull, and because it offers a practical step-by-step lobbying process, this book is well worth a small business owner’s time – especially any small business owner with a regulatory ax to grind.

    About the author

Amy Handlin has worked in state and local government for more than two decades. Making Globalization Work - Joseph E. Stiglitz

In this summary you will learn

Why globalization has roused opposition around the world
What changes will ensure a more equitable, prosperous future for all nations

    Recommendation

Just about every major gathering of world leaders draws determined, often violent, protests against globalization. If you wonder why, Joseph E. Stiglitz’s book explains ample reasons. The Nobel Prize-winning economist follows up his 2002 book, Globalization and Its Discontents, with further analysis of pressing economic, political and environmental concerns, and the conflicts they engender between developing and developed countries. He doesn’t just dwell on the dreadful problems he outlines in such knowledgeable detail. He also offers remedies and reforms, though some seem quite idealistic for a notable economist who sees so clearly what has gone wrong. His book is densely packed with data, case studies and facts, but Stiglitz intersperses the dry material with thoughtful asides on the questions of morality and equity that globalization must answer. getAbstract finds that his book will enlighten readers about the challenges and consequences of globalization on humankind’s one and only planet.

Why the World Trade Organization exists
How competing agendas create disagreement, bickering and, sometimes, good trade policies
Why the many trade summits conducted since 2001 have taken only incremental steps toward free trade

    Recommendation

Veteran journalist Paul Blustein blames half the 2008 economic meltdown – the non-Wall Street half – on dysfunctional global trade policies, and then he explains why. World trade is an arcane topic, complete with mysterious acronyms, complex rules, and negotiators with huge egos and serpentine negotiating positions pushed by antagonistic nations. In an increasingly global economy, trade negotiations are never simple. Even so, Blustein manages to tell this provocative, complex, depressing story as engagingly as possible. At times the book bogs down in negotiating points that only trade technocrats will appreciate, but Blustein fleshes out the story by capturing the quirky, sometimes volatile, personalities involved. Accordingly, getAbstract recommends his book to those who can’t get enough about world trade. If you want all the ins and outs, you’ll be very happy here.

The End of Wall Street-Roger Lowenstein

In this summary you will learn

    How subprime mortgages originated
Why they became the new darling of Wall Street
How they led to Wall Street’s demise

    Recommendation

How did mortgage loans to not-quite-prime borrowers evolve into the engine of doom for Wall Street? Journalist and best-selling author Roger Lowenstein uncovers the root causes and the culmination of the 2008 financial debacle. He explains how loans to formerly unattractive clients brought out the best in Wall Street innovation and the worst in Wall Street greed. His behind-the-scenes look at the people involved, their backgrounds and their decision making is a fascinating depiction of how the mortgage ball got rolling. Lowenstein’s recounting of this now familiar story manages to excite like a novel, with pulse-pounding deadlines, superhero bureaucrats and evil villains (too many to count). He even opens his book with a lengthy “cast of characters.” getAbstract recommends his saga for its you-are-there view of what really happened on Wall Street – and, particularly, what really happened during one fateful weekend in September 2008.

In this summary you will learn

    What the “charity trap” is
Why the business sector has always been the main engine of combating poverty
How "a new Marshall Plan” could promote development in poor countries

    Recommendation

Prosperous nations today spend more than $100 billion annually on aid to developing countries. Still, according to the World Bank “1.4 billion people live on less than $1.25 per day.” Columbia University Business School academics R. Glenn Hubbard and William Duggan warn against funneling more money to corrupt governments and tinpot dictators for development projects that never materialize. Instead, they propose “a new Marshall Plan for the world’s poorest nations.” Like the original Marshall Plan that helped European countries rebuild their economies after World War II, the new program would focus on loans to help local businesses get off the ground. The authors thoroughly discuss where alternative plans have failed and are not shy about presenting the foreseeable obstacles and obvious downsides of their own plan. They explain in detail how to launch it, what institutions would be in charge and how they’d have to function. The authors even particularize the financing scheme by providing a detailed budget in the appendix. getAbstract recommends this vital, thoughtful, interesting proposal on how rich nations can help poor nations lift their people out of poverty.

Bust - Greece, the Euro and the Sovereign Debt Crisis

    9781119994411.jpg

In this summary you will learn

Why the European Union created the euro
How Greece managed its way into the common currency
How the Greek debt crisis imperils the euro

    Recommendation

For a relatively small country, Greece has made outsized contributions to the world: mythic legends and heroes, great art and architecture, illuminating philosophers and thinkers, and the very word “democracy.” Yet the nation that invented the Greek tragedy is living its own version of one today, dealing with fatal flaws that threaten to spread its suffering to the rest of Europe and beyond. Journalist Matthew Lynn dissects the origins of Greece’s debt crisis and relates how the dream of a united Europe has led to what he predicts is the euro’s imminent downfall. His dry, witty, clever writing style provides some relief around the all-too-real events he recounts and the dramatic prospects he predicts. getAbstract recommends this modern-day tale of unfolding human tragedy that’s going to need a deus ex machina to bring catharsis and resolution.

    About the Author

Matthew Lynn is a financial journalist and columnist for Bloomberg TV and Bloomberg News. He wrote the Death Force military thriller series.

The Audacity to Win - The Inside Story and Lessons of Barack Obama's Historic Victory

    audacity-win-inside-story-lessons-barack-obamas-historic-david-plouffe-hardcover-cover-art.jpg

In this summary you will learn

What happened on the inside of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign
How Internet technology and a disciplined grass-roots campaign transformed U.S. politics
How Obama’s experts built a winning political organization

    Recommendation

President Barack Obama’s historic political campaign deserves to be studied for its innovative organization, volunteer effort, fundraising and use of technology. But it is also a compelling story about an unlikely candidate and the highly motivated expert team that pulled off one of the greatest game-changing upsets in U.S. political history. Obama campaign manager David Plouffe (rhymes with “bluff”) has written a diary-like firsthand account that delivers insights and perspectives previously known only to insiders. While he tells his story chronologically, the suspense builds as internal and external opponents battle and fall by the wayside. getAbstract recommends this engrossing David-and-Goliath story to leaders, political aficionados, technology and media buffs, and anyone interested in overcoming huge odds to become a winner.

    About the Author

David Plouffe served as Dick Gephardt’s chief of staff, and managed three congressional races and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Plouffe and David Axelrod were the lead strategists on Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate bid. After managing Obama’s presidential run, Plouffe helped set up Organizing for America, a 13-million-person Obama-support organization.
