One Heart to Win (Callahan-Warren #1)
    (2013)
    A novel by Johanna Lindsey

Lindsey's golden anniversary 50th novel! #1 New York Times bestselling author Johanna Lindsey presents a passionate novel of hidden identities, family secrets, and love that transcends a fifty-year feud set in the majestic ranchland of 1880s Montana Territory.

Some young ladies marry for money and social standing, a few lucky ones marry for love - but Tiffany Warren is marrying to end a feud. Honoring her mother's promise, Tiffany reluctantly travels west to meet her estranged father and his enemy's eldest son, rancher Hunter Callahan. Once the Warrens and the Callahans are united by marriage, both clans will stop squabbling over a disputed strip of land. In the chaos of a train robbery Tiffany seizes a golden opportunity: By assuming the identity of her father's new housekeeper she can live with the father she never knew and assess his true character, as well as that of the neighboring cowboy to whom she is betrothed. But, too late, Tiffany discovers that the rivalry between the Warrens and the Callahans has escalated when the Callahans steal the Warrens' housekeeper as soon as she steps off the train! Now, Tiffany, who is pretending to be Jennifer Fleming, finds herself living in the enemy camp, under the same roof as her fiancé. All too soon she learns her intended is a handsome, sweet talking charmer whom she has to fight off because he can't keep his eyes - or his hands - off Jennifer. After Tiffany's charade is exposed she refuses to marry Hunter to end the feud. As Hunter goes about claiming his rightful bride-to-be, he knows that although he loves two women - proper, elegant Tiffany as well as spunky, passionate Jennifer - he has only one heart to win.

    Marriage Most Scandalous
    (2005)
    A novel by Johanna Lindsey

With the dazzling blend of romance, humor, and poignant storytelling that has made her one of the world's best-loved authors, Johanna Lindsey presents the passionate Regency-era tale of an earl's daughter who dares to pose as the wife of a deadly mercenary in order to save her former guardian.

Lady Margaret Landor first met Sebastian Townshend as a child, when he caught her peeking into her older sister's engagement ball. Tall, dashing, and charming, Sebastian was one of the most sought-after bachelors in Kent and cut a romantic figure she would not soon forget. Never did she dream that one day she would be living at his family's magnificent estate with Sebastian's father, the eighth Earl of Edgewood, as her guardian--while Sebastian is banished from his family due to the tragic results of a duel.

When life at Edgewood takes a sinister turn with the earl suffering a suspicious number of life-threatening accidents, Margaret wonders if Sebastian's younger brother and his wife have grown impatient to inherit the earldom. Setting out to find the one man she believes can set the situation to rights, she discovers that Sebastian Townshend has forged a new identity for himself on the continent.

Now known as The Raven, a deadly mercenary, notorious for accomplishing any mission no matter how seemingly impossible, he has vowed never to return to England. Not until Margaret meets his outrageous monetary demands does Sebastian agree to return home, reluctantly posing as her husband in order to facilitate his return to society. When he learns she cannot afford to pay his fee, he suggests a scandalous trade.

As Margaret and Sebastian work to uncover the intrigue at his father's estate, a fierce passion blooms that neither of them anticipated and neither can resist. But can Margaret persuade Sebastian to abandon the dark path he believes is his fate and claim the life--and love--he deserves? Breathtaking in scope and wondrously passionate, Marriage Most Scandalous is Johanna Lindsey at her finest.

    So Speaks the Heart
    (1983)
    A novel by Johanna Lindsey

Brigitte de Louroux is the daughter of the house, but is crudely being treated as the lowliest of servants. She has no family left, as her dear brother has been killed, and a wicked woman, her half-brother's aunt Druoda, has taken over the running of the house, making Brigette a virtual prisoner.

Rowland of Montville is a noble and a skilled warrior. Yet he lacks polish, and suffers humiliation for it. Banished by his father, Luthor, six years ago, he is suddenly summoned by Luthor. It seems that Luthor is being harangued(?) by his two sons-in-law, and needs Rowland's assistance to save his keep.

As a bastard, and raised by his own father, he grew up hated and abused by his stepmother and half sisters, leaving him with a hardened heart, but he won’t leave his father in the lurch. On his way back home, he gets into a skirmish and the man saves his life. The man is too sick to travel, but asks Rowland to let his sister know he is alive, and will return when able. This man is Quintin, the brother Brigitte thought dead. However, when Rowland arrives at Brigitte’s home, Druoda fills him with lies, and ends up forcing him to take Brigitte with him as his serf.

Brigitte is no serf, but Rowland will not hear it. Attracted to her beyond belief, and with long days of travel ahead of them, the both act on the passion they find impossible to deny. Though there are some obstacles, it seems that Rowland and Brigitte might find joy together. In the meantime, Rowland promises to alert Brigitte’s true guardian.

However, an interesting and surprising twist occurs, and this changes everything. Roland has been having nightmares since he was a small child, and now the nightmares have an explanation. This doesn’t mean, however, that he and Brigitte have worked out all of their difficulties, as she doesn’t yet fully trust him.

SO SPEAKS THE HEART is a warm love story, with intriguing characters. It is very interesting to see Rowland evolve from a gruff to a loving man, especially when a part of his past is revealed. Also, his treatment of Brigitte is none other than tender, to the point where perhaps Brigitte wonders is she really has to worry about making the real truth of her existence clear to Rowland, as Druoda did a good job misleading Rowland. These factors, along with excellent pacing, and Ms. Lindsey gifts her readers with a wonderfully warm conclusion.

Reviewer's note: Mass Market Paperback release, January 2004, Original release date, 1983.

    Johanna Lindsey
    USA (1952 - )

    About Johanna Lindsey

Johanna Helen Lindsey was born on March 10, 1952 in Germany, where her father, a soldier in the U.S. Army, was stationed. The family moved about a great deal when she was young. Her father always dreamed of retiring to Hawaii, and after he passed away in 1964 Johanna and her mother settled there to honor him.

In 1970, when she was still in school, she married Ralph, becoming a young housewife. The marriage had three children; Alfred, Joseph and Garret, who already have made her a grandmother. After her husband's death, Johanna moved to Maine, New England, to stay near her family.

Johanna wrote her first book, Captive Bride in 1977 "on a whim", and the book was a success. By 2006, with over 58 Million copies of her books have been sold worldwide, with translations appearing in 12 languages, Johanna Lindsey is one of the world's most popular authors of historical romance.

Johanna's books span the various eras of history, including books set in the Middle Ages, the American "Old West" and the popular Regency England-Scotland. She has even written a few sci-fi romances. By far the most popular among her books are the stories about the Malory-Anderson Family, a Regency England saga.

    The Heir
(The first book in the Reid Family series)
    (2000)
    A novel by Johanna Lindsey

The Romance Reader - Cathy Sova

    The Heir
is the story of an arranged marriage that is desired by neither party. Sabrina Lambert has come to London for a Season, one scraped together by her maiden aunts. She’ll be assisted by lovely Ophelia Reid, who is already the toast of society for her beauty and is enjoying a Season of her own. Ophelia has plans, however. Her parents have arranged a marriage for her with a future Marquis, Duncan MacTavish. He’s a Scotsman, a barbarian, no doubt. If Ophelia can manage to make him the laughingstock of London before he even arrives there, then perhaps her parents will be mortified and let her out of the engagement.

Sabrina is bemused by all these machinations, and soon finds out that Ophelia’s vicious tongue can spread gossip in all directions even over Sabrina, whose family history of suspicious deaths have led most to believe she’ll soon take her own life. The fact that most of those deaths were rationally explained means nothing. When Sabrina’s sense of humor and sunny disposition garner her a few too many dance partners at her first party, Ophelia’s true nature rises to the fore. Soon all of London has heard about the scandal.

Duncan MacTavish is in a bind as well. His English mother and Scots father are both long dead, and he has just been told by his Scottish grandfather that he is the heir to an English title of Marquis. Duncan is outraged. Leave the Scottish estate and travel to bleak England, all to please a grandfather he’s never met? And marry an unknown English girl into the bargain? Never. The most he’ll agree to is making a visit and looking over the crop of English misses. But he won’t marry to please his grandfathers.

When Ophelia and Duncan meet at his grandfather’s estate, neither is impressed. Ophelia insults Duncan, who declares he’ll never marry such a woman. Sabrina, however, soon becomes good friends with Duncan. When Ophelia decides to reinstate the engagement rather than face Society’s scorn for being dumped, events are set in motion that will be difficult to stop.

The Heir contains some of what readers might call Classic Lindsey. The dialogue is witty, most of the characterizations are clear, and the settings are well-drawn without overwhelming the story. The “falling in love with a friend” plot isn’t new, but here it works well, especially on the part of Sabrina. She’s easily the most engaging character in the book. Short, a bit plump, possessing remarkable eyes but little else in the way of traditional beauty, she’s well aware of her shortcomings and uses humor to cope. This approach wins her friends and admirers, though she’s unable to believe that men might find her attractive.

Duncan was much blander. Other than rail at his grandfathers for trying to arrange his life, we never find out much about what he does want. He’s handsome enough, and seems to be a nice guy, until a climactic point about two-thirds through when he does something so loutish that it left this reader’s mouth hanging open. I won’t reveal the plot point, except to say that his utter lack of regard or even thought for Sabrina’s welfare was inexcusable. That it helped set up Duncan’s and Ophelia’s re-engagement was contrived, weak plotting. From that point on, I didn’t care a hoot in Hades for Duncan. Marrying Ophelia would have been exactly what he deserved.

As for Ophelia, she’s a lead character too, for all the space that is devoted to her. A more self-centered and despicable character would be hard to find, and no doubt that’s exactly what she was intended to be. However, it says something about the book that her comeuppance was far more interesting than any romance developing between Sabrina or Duncan.

Ultimately, the romance in this romance novel misses the mark. Diehard Lindsey fans may not blink at paying $24.00 for The Heir, but my advice is to get it from the library. The story just doesn’t justify the price.

Let Love Find You (Reid Family #4)
    by Johanna Lindsey

    Published June 12th 2012

London society has its very own Cupid. Renowned horse breeder and occasional matchmaker Devin Baldwin pairs eligible young ladies with suitable gentlemen based on his theory of animal magnetism. Unafraid of ruffling the ton’s feathers, this darkly handsome Cupid doles out tips for bettering one’s chances of meeting a mate that are as pointed as the love legend’s sharpest arrows!

Lovely Amanda Locke, the daughter of a duke, is everything a nobleman could desire, yet she enters her third Season still searching for a match. Gossipmongers’ tongues are wagging, and her mystified family is considering drastic measures to find her a husband. But the insufferable advice of this Cupid fellow is the last thing Amanda wants.

When an earl passionate about horses becomes the target of her husband hunt, Amanda knows it’s time to overcome her fear of riding. With her sister-in-law Ophelia hastening the romance along by arranging riding lessons, Amanda is soon taking instruction from infuriating Devin Baldwin. Astonishingly, in her daily encounters with Devin—who treats her as an ordinary young woman, not a prize to be won at the marriage mart—Amanda experiences passion for the first time. Now, her search for a match takes her in an unexpected direction as she finds herself falling in love with Cupid himself.
