The Kindly Ones (French: Les Bienveillantes) is a historical novel written in French by American-born author Jonathan Littell. The 900-page book became a bestseller in France and was widely discussed in newspapers, magazines, academic journals, books and seminars. It was also awarded two of the most prestigious French literary awards, the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française and the Prix Goncourt in 2006. As of December 2009 it has been translated into seventeen languages. The book is narrated by protagonist Maximilien Aue, a former SS officer of French and German ancestry who helps carry out massacres during the Holocaust, but in the end flees from Germany to start a new life in northern France. Aue is present during several of the major events of World War II. Named one of the "100 Best Books of the Decade" by The Times of London "Oh my human brothers, let me tell you how it happened." Mais un roman dont le personnage principal est du côté allemand, cela n'est pas fréquent. Les Bienveillantes, de Jonathan Littell, se met dans le camp allemand et déroule son histoire. Ce roman, épais et fourni, permet de mettre à bas une perception de l'armée allemande que les films traitant du sujet ont longuement construite. Beaucoup pense que cette armée était efficiente et efficace, structurée et organisée, avec des soldats disciplinés et forts, avec des soldats froids et sans états d’âmes. L'histoire des Bienveillantes, bien que ce ne soit ni un documentaire ni une enquête historique, met à bas cette perception. Dans Les Bienveillantes, les soldats doutent et hésitent. Les soldats pleurent et s’interrogent sur les ordres reçus de la hiérarchie. L’armée est loin d’être extrêmement organisée.
